how did you learn about wentworth?
if i remember it correctly, it was someone from habbo that recommended it to me. this was back in 2015, when i had also just recently discovered orange is the new black and we were talking about it. she mentioned 'wentworth' and i was curious.
why the heck do you like this show so much?
okay, when i found out about this show i was only 16. i was in my first year of university. during this time of my life, i was far away from home, so i suddenly had all this feeling of freedom to become myself. that's when i started to really come into terms with accepting who i was. i started coming out to people (as bisexual, at the time). around the same time, i started looking for queer representation in the media.
being in a new environment, i was also in a really dark place mentally and emotionally. watching tv shows had been sort of my escape route which honestly didn't do much good for my academics.
anyway, my motivation for watching the show in the beginning, was the queer content, which wentworth is very generous with. as i finished each episode, i found myself starting to fall in love with everyone in this show. they all carry such complexity and depth in their personas. even if a character isn't inherently likeable, they still manage to be fascinating in their delivery. take ferguson for example. she's the character that everyone loves to hate, but the way that pamela rabe(the actress) navigates through her fictional character is so wildly engrossing.
i got hooked to this show because the story telling is so convincing to the point that i felt an emotional attachment these make-believe people. of course i still have my favorites, but i can say that every single one of them who played their respective roles had done, and continues to do it exceptionally.
in summary, wentworth is the best tv show ever and if you try to argue i will... ignore you, because your opinion -- however wrong it may be -- is yours and is still valid but not at all important to me.
let's talk about my favorites...
favorite characters:
if i only had to pick one, i will say that
franky doyle
is my favorite.franky doyle is the first character i became attached to. i am obsessed with her in all aspects. i love her personality and her charm. not to mention, her intellect. to this day i still don't know whether i want to date her or be her. with that said, i will always feel a personal connection/relation to her character -- with her being such a lesbian goddess and icon and an overall badass bitch. she also has the best storyline progression and character development in my opinion. which i am so happy about because god knows that if she suffered the same fate as her legacy character from prison h block, a bitch would raise all fucking hell.
favorite franky line:
"i'm gonna walk out of those gates, and all this place and everyone in it, is just a walking pile of ashes. and i wanna get picked up by a hot girl... in a hot car... and driven off into the sunset. so, how's that for a picture?"
but, ultimately, i cannot have just one favorite character in this show. my other favorites would be:
bea smith
she was the main character, and no one who watches this show would ever not include bea smith as a favorite. how could you not? from being an underdog, to taking over and running a whole prison, you have to admire her for her strength despite living through a series of tragic events. bea smith has lived the worst fucking fate on this show and unjustly so. she is someone who has a big heart, and deserved none of what she's gotten. rest in peace, my queen bee. i love you to the moon and back.
favorite bea line:
"you don't run this prison. i do"
kaz proctor
another top dog, kaz was introduced in the third season. let me tell you, she wasn't always one of my favorites. in fact, i hated her initially for always getting in the shit with bea. she came in as this crazy fan girl who tried to pull a yolanda saldivar on bea when her righteous acts of retribution was not appreciated by queen bea. she later redeemed herself, as her character was explored more deeply.
i eventually started seeing myself admiring kaz and her principles. in bea's words she's "just a fucked up little girl who's trying to save the world." which for the most part, is true, kaz did show to have a fucked up way of trying to protect her girls.
in season 4, we learn why kaz feels the responsibility to 'save' vulnerable women. as well as why she has a strong aversion towards men. i remember watching the episode in which her past was unravelled, i cried so much. poor kaz... no one deserved to go through what she did at such a young age; or at any age, for that matter. more importantly, no one deserves to end their journey like she did. rest in peace queen.
also -- tammy macintosh is one of my favorite people to have existed. she is such a gem. seriously. and i think she looks like the human version of a barbie doll.
favorite kaz line:
"what is wrong with you? what is wrong with all of you? by bashing each other you're only hurting yourselves!"
bridget westfall
ah, the hot psychologist who fell for her incredibly sexy patient. bridget westfall was first introduced in season three as the new prison shrink. i loved bridget from the get go because 1. she's hot as fuck. 2. she's really good at her job. i mean, with the consideration of her engaging in a clandestine relationship with franky after her release. that part was a bit unethical -- still my favorite thing to have happened in the show, nonetheless. i'm taking her moment of weakness when it came to franky as something that we might call 'true love'. which, in theory, no one can fight against. i think... i don't know about these things(love).
i guess what i am trying to say is: she wasn't a completely unproblematic character but she did well by the women.
also fun fact about me: now that i think back to it i realize that bridget inspired me to shift from being an english major to being a psych major. that's how much she made an impact.
favorite bridget line:
"i'm trained to deal with all types... even all those who appear to have their shit together."
sue "boomer" jenkins
i mean, come on. it's boomer. she's been there from the start, being her funny self as usual. i love her. her one liners and her witty come backs are some of the bests and they never fail to crack me up. the show is not famous for it's comedy but there are some hilarious scenes; most of them, because of her. which is not to say that she shouldn't be taken seriously. she's one of the most complex and intriguing prisoners on the show, specially after they started telling more of her back story. as her life story goes, she had an alco for a mother, who not only caused her to have fetal acohol syndrome, but also treated her like crap and pretty much neglected her. this explains why she's the way that she is. she's always portrayed as this 'can't-read,can't-write, dumb-fuck' character who is nothing but a follower, always shadowed by someone else; but i believe she's one of the most strong willed out of all the women.
favorite boomer line:
"hey, if you're not hungry max, i'll have it. 'cause i gotta keep my energy up for all that rootin' aye!
joan "freak" ferguson
alright, when it comes to this one right here, i didn't know if i should include her on this list because truth be told: i hate her. god do i hate her so much. so much.
ferguson is unarguably the worst human being on the fucking wentworth planet, everything she does makes me want to riot... but i don't feel the same watching wentworth without her. which, speaking of, she makes a come back in season eight, it appears. i have no fucking clue how this bitch managed to literally dig her way out of being buried alive, but consider me impressed. surprised? not so much, it is ferguson after all. she makes the plot ten times more interesting, and for that i love her. also, she can be surprisingly funny. i admire pamela rabe for being able to play the role of someone so vindictive and so sick in the head; all the while being such a genuine goofball in real life (from how i see her in interviews). if that isn't real talent i don't know what is.
favorite freak line:
"if you try to use this against me, i will a n n i h i l a t e you."
allie novak
allie novak -- the hot, former junkie prostitute, current prisoner who fell in love with bea smith. she went into prison while being under kaz's wing.
actually, allie is someone who is (or was, with season eight in mind) always under someone's wing. first kaz, and then bea; then, as it was revealed in season six, marie(who--distastefully enough--i actually love despite her being an antagonist -- a repulsive one at that, too. why? she's hot.).
i think allie's like this because she was used to looking up to women with power, as she's often saved by one. it seems though, that in the next season, we will see a different and much evolved side to allie. from what it looks like on the trailer, she'll be on the flip side of the coin. if that's what's happening, i'm excited to see how she navigates through her new found responsiblity of looking after the women. hell yeah, allie for top dog.
favorite allie line:
i never gave up on you. you were gone... you were dead... but i never gave up on you. never.
will jackson
this show doesn't have a lot of male characters (duh). i know, what a gift. before you get pissy i am not a man hater. i have sex with men. they're quite useful in that way. will jackson is probably the only decent male screw in the prison. he's generally well-liked by the prisoners, too.
he's one of my favorites because i have to prove that i don't hate men he's genuinely a kind hearted lad and he cares about the women. sometimes, even going an extra mile to help/save them. for one, he did bea a huge favor in first season.two, he let franky off the hook which is so big of him as a person. finally, he buried ferguson alive. total legend move. although, i'm not happy about the ptsd he suffered from because of that.
favorite will jackson line:
"your mom wanted you to know that she loves you... to the moon and back."
linda "smiles" miles
linda is one of the prison screws. even though she's not a main character, she's still one of my favorites. for the reason being that she's hilarious. again, wentworth? not a comedy. but whenever smiles get to have her moment on a scene, she always puts humour behind it. it takes the heat off watching an emotionally heavy series and i always look forward to her witty and sarcastic lines.
favorite linda line:
"oy, smith! you back from lalaland yet?"
favorite season:
season three would be my favorite season because 1. this was the prime of bea's role as top dog and 2. franky and bridget's story line was introduced. apart from that, the entirety of season three was just pure awesome. everyone-- from the main characters to the supporting characters -- had their own interesting story progressions. there was not a boring side character. we also see the freak's antics get more and more fucked up in this season.
favorite season finale:
season two's finale wins this one for me. i specially loved seeing the hole between brayden's eye. does that make me vindictive? it was such a prized moment when bea got her revenge. let's not even talk about the way she planned it all out. her brawl with franky that led her escape was some next level shit.
least favorite season finale:
don't get me wrong, i love the whole of season 4. except for the last fucking episode. everything was perfect until they decided to go with killing off the main character of the show. it was so devastating.
t h e s h r i n e
these will mostly be random photos from the show which may or may not be taken from my inactive wentworth fan account. i may also put some scene compilations here from youtube.
alright! that's all for now. i'll add more when i feel like it.
